Fire Prevention Week

The Ketchum Fire Department does an extensive fire prevention presentation at all of the local schools and day cares each year during Fire Prevention week. Teaching kids early about prevention helps promote home safety for the rest of their lives. Contact the Ketchum Fire Department for our annual schedule of presentations.

Smoke Detectors

Properly working smoke detectors are the number one life saving device in your home during a fire. All smoke detectors have batteries which should be replaced at least once a year. We recommend replacing your smoke detector batteries twice a year when you change the time on your clocks for Daylight Savings Time. Another life saving device is a Carbon Monoxide detector. Carbon monoxide is an odorless gas that can leak from wood stoves, fireplaces and furnaces and can be life threatening if not detected early on.

Addresses

Ask yourself the next time you're coming home in the dark if you can see your street address from the public street in front of your house. Most people don't realize just how important a visible street address is until they need an ambulance or fire truck to get to their house in an emergency. Please make sure you make your address visible to emergency responders every day of the year. You never know when the time we take to find your house could mean the difference between a loved ones life or death.

Fireworks

All aerial fireworks are illegal in Ketchum. They are illegal if they or the sparks they emit, go more than 20 feet in the air or travel outside a circle 15 feet in diameter. Each Fourth of July, children under 14 suffer 30 to 40 percent of the nation's injuries from fireworks. Fireworks cause more than 32,000 fires and more than $30 million in property damage annually. Our community has seen firsthand the dangers of wildfires. Please help us all stay safe each Fourth of July.

Stop by Ketchum Fire Station 1 anytime to visit with our firefighters, have your blood pressure taken or just to look at our fire engines and equipment! Kids are always welcome to sit in the fire engines with our firefighters.
