Pay it forward. That is the motivation of Commissioner Baird Gourlay. During an introspective trip to visit his son in Mongolia, Baird was moved to run again for City Council in 2013, which also allowed him to serve as a Commissioner on the Ketchum Urban Renewal Agency Board.
“We traveled to a lot of Buddhist monasteries and learned that to reach nirvana, you have to do good things all of your life. My son turned to me and asked, ‘So, Dad, when are you going to start?” Baird believes his service to his community is his best way to give back.
Baird first became involved in City government when he was appointed to the City’s Planning and Zoning Commission in 1998. After serving the Planning and Zoning Commission for three years, Baird ran for a Council seat. As a Councilman, Baird was instrumental in the formation of the Ketchum Urban Renewal Agency (KURA). He has also been closely involved with the Ketchum Community Development Corporation’s (KCDC) Energy Solutions Team and the land lease and partnership with the Wood River YMCA.
During this term, Baird plans to promote Site Based Energy (SBE) solutions, to support the Fly Sun Valley Alliance and the Freidman Memorial Airport and to explore the possibilities of a private Business Association.
Baird also plans to work toward the development of a Green Building Ordinance that would give incentive to local contractors. He will emphasize the need for constructive planning to better manage the community’s growth and will work toward sustaining Ketchum’s natural beauty.
In addition to his responsibilities as Councilman and KURA Commissioner, Baird maintains roles as a business owner, energy consultant, husband, father and outdoor enthusiast. He has co-owned and operated PK’s Ski & Sports for more than 30 years. Baird also works as an energy consultant with Harry Griffith for E=MC2 and is the father of three. Outside of work, you might find Baird on the slopes, enjoying the trails on his mountain bike, waterskiing, fishing or golfing.
